John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway, the Remarkable WWII Pilot Known as the ‘Lucky Irishman’

The last surviving participant of the Battle of Britain, John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway, has passed away at the age of 105.

In 2022, Hemingway was photographed at Casement Aerodrome, Baldonnel, standing beside a Hurricane fighter plane, the same model he piloted during the war.

Hemingway, a Group Captain in the British Royal Air Force, hailed from Dartry in south Dublin. Throughout World War II, he was shot down four times and survived numerous perilous missions, earning him a reputation for incredible luck and resilience.
