Chuck Schumer draws ire of Democrats, liberal media voices after voting to avert shutdown

Senator Chuck Schumer faced backlash from fellow Democrats and liberal media figures after he supported a Republican-led spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. On "The View," co-hosts criticized Schumer, with Whoopi Goldberg planning to question him in an upcoming interview. Sunny Hostin expressed disappointment, suggesting that Republicans should have been held accountable for a shutdown.

Schumer, along with some Republicans, voted for a continuing resolution to keep the government open, arguing that a shutdown would benefit former President Donald Trump. Co-hosts Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin supported Schumer's decision, believing a shutdown would have been detrimental.

During his appearance on "The View," Hostin accused Schumer of yielding to Republicans, while Griffin questioned his leadership within the Democratic Party. Schumer defended his decision and stated he would continue to lead the Democrats.

On "CBS Mornings," Gayle King highlighted the lack of trust some Democrats have in Schumer's leadership. Jennifer Rubin, a former Washington Post columnist, compared Schumer to President Biden, suggesting he should step down to avoid further harm to democracy.

Critics argue that Schumer's decision lacked strategy and leadership, with some Democrats considering a primary challenge against him. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized Schumer's move as a mistake, emphasizing the need to protect social programs.

Despite the criticism, Schumer remains focused on countering Trump's influence and is not concerned about a primary challenge. Some Democrats, like Rep. Jasmine Crockett and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, also voiced their disapproval of Schumer's actions.

The Senate passed the spending bill with a 54-46 vote, with most Republicans and a few Democrats supporting it, while others, including Sen. Rand Paul, opposed it.
