A tragic fire erupted in a nightclub in North Macedonia early Sunday morning, resulting in the deaths of 51 people and injuring over 100, according to officials. The blaze began at around 2:35 a.m. during a concert by a local pop band at the Pulse nightclub in Kocani, sparked by pyrotechnic devices, as reported by Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski.
"The fire was ignited by sparks and quickly spread throughout the venue," Toshkovski explained. Those injured were transported to hospitals nationwide, with many suffering from severe burns.
Health Minister Arben Taravari confirmed that 118 individuals were hospitalized. "We are utilizing all available resources to save as many lives as possible," Taravari stated, noting that neighboring countries Albania, Bulgaria, and Greece have offered assistance.
The fire caused part of the nightclub's roof to collapse. The building, formerly a carpet warehouse, had been operating as a club for several years, according to local media.
Police have cordoned off the area as investigators collect evidence from the scene. Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expressed his condolences, stating, "This is a devastating day for Macedonia. The loss of so many young lives is a tragedy beyond words."
Authorities are examining the club's licensing and safety measures, with Toshkovski emphasizing the government's responsibility to hold those accountable. One arrest has been made, though details about the individual's involvement were not disclosed.
